A RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE OF
WILLIAM JOSEPH BROPHY
WHEREAS William Joseph Brophy, was born on October 6, 1936, in Boston, Massachusetts, and departed this life on September 21, 2004, was an esteemed historian and scholar, and a member and past president of the East Texas Historical Association; and
WHEREAS, William Joseph Brophy received his early education at Boston Latin and Spring Branch, Texas, high school, then served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1957; and
WHEREAS, William Joseph Brophy received a B.A. and M.A. from North Texas State University, and a M.A. and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University before joining the History Department at Stephen F. Austin State University in 1964, where he served for 40 years; and
WHEREAS, William Joseph Brophy earned a reputation as a scholar of the American South, American Cold War foreign policy, and of the American experience in Viet Nam, and was a respected author of American history textbooks and an esteemed professor of history; and
WHEREAS, William Joseph Brophy, served as chairman of the Department of History, associate vice-president for Academic Affairs, dean of Liberal Arts, and Interim President of Stephen F. Austin State University, and founded academic and enrichment programs that have benefited thousands of students, among which was the Academic Enrichment Living Center ; and
WHEREAS, William Joseph Brophy was an active member of the North Street Church of Christ in Nacogdoches, a beloved husband and father, and a cherished member of the faculty of Stephen F. Austin State University;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the membership of the East Texas Historical Association laments the passing of this “good and faithful servant” on September 21, 2004, extends sympathy to his family and friends; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the Annual Meeting and another presented as is appropriate to the family of William Joseph Brophy, that they may know of the love and esteem in which he is yet held by all.
