Haynes Webster Dugan
A RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE OF
HAYNES WEBSTER DUGAN
WHEREAS Haynes Webster Dugan, born in Sherman, Texas, on March 13, 1913, and departed from this life on February 6, 2007, in Shreveport, Louisiana, was a writer, a petroleum landsman, a soldier, a historian, and scholar; and
WHEREAS Haynes Webster Dugan, graduated from Texas A&M in 1934, and received his M.A. from Columbia University's School of Journalism in 1936, then worked as a literary agent, a salesman, and a reporter for the Shreveport Times in the years prior to the outbreak of World War II, and worked for Texaco for twenty-eight years following the war; and
WHEREAS, Haynes Webster Dugan received his commission as a 2 nd lieutenant upon his graduation from Texas A&M, served five years on active duty, beginning before Pearl Harbor and continuing through VJ Day, retired from the Army Reserve after twenty years of service with the rank of lieutenant colonel, served as public relations officer to General George S. Patton and five other general officers, and earned a number of military honors, including the Bronze Star, a Presidential Unit Citation, and a medal from the mayor of Mons, Belgium; and
WHEREAS, Haynes Webster Dugan served as historian for the 3 rd Armored division, developed the archive of that unit at the University of Illinois, and throughout his life contributed data to international historians, especially on the subject of World War II; and
WHEREAS, Haynes Webster Dugan was the author of several books, including The Story of an (Almost) Barefoot Petroleum Landman , On My Way to the Cemetery ; The Great Class of 1934 , and The Red River Bo ok, and participated in the revision of the history of the 3 rd Armored Division; and
WHEREAS, Haynes Webster Dugan was Life Member of the East Texas Historical Association who contributed reviews and other items to the East Texas Historical Journal ;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the membership of the East Texas Historical Association laments the passing of this “good and faithful servant” on February 6, 2007, extends sympathy to his family and friends; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the Annual Meeting and another presented as is appropriate to the family of Haynes Webster Dugan, that they may know of the love and esteem in which he is yet held by all.
