A.C. Greene

A RESOLUTION
HONORING THE LIFE OF
ALVIN CARL "A.C." GREENE

WHEREAS A.C. Greene, born Alvin Carl Greene in Abilene, Texas, on November 4, 1923, and who departed this life on April 5, 2002, at his home in Salado, Texas, was a historian and author of great repute and a long-time member of the East Texas Historical Association, and

WHEREAS, A.C. Green, a graduate of Abilene Christian College and writer and journalist, who resided in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for a number of years, wrote for the Dallas Times Herald, and for almost twenty years wrote the "Texas Sketches" column for the Dallas Morning News, was an interpreter and popularizer of Texas history; and

WHEREAS, A.C. Greene served for six years as resident professor of Texas studies at the University of North Texas and coordinating director of the University of North Texas Center for Texas Studies; and

WHEREAS, A.C. Greene was an active member of the Texas State Historical Association, the Western Historical Association, and the Texas Institute of Letters, as well as the East Texas Historical Association, and served as assistant editor and later executive editor of the Southwestern Historical Quarterly; and

WHEREAS, A.C. Greene wrote almost thirty books of Texas history, poetry, fiction, essays, and general Texana, earning him the reputation as the expert on Dallas history and culture and as "the dean of Texas letters" and "in charge of the definition of Texas literature;" and

WHEREAS, A.C. Greene was a fellow of the Texas Institute of Letters and the Texas State Historical Association, and recipient of a Dobie-Paisano Writing Fellowship, the Bookend Award from the Texas Book Festival, and the Lon Tinkel Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Texas Institute of Letters;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the membership of the East Texas Historical Association laments the passing of this "good and faithful servant" on April 5, 2002, extends sympathy to his family and friends; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the Annual Meeting and another presented as is appropriate to the family of A.C. Greene, that they may know of the love and esteem in which he is yet held by all.
