Memorial Resolutions

Margaret Louise Swett Henson

A RESOLUTION
HONORING THE LIFE OF
MARGARET LOUISE SWETT HENSON

Margaret Swett Henson passed away on January 22, 2001 in Houston. She was born January 3, 1924, in Chicago. After graduating from Glenbard High School in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, she came to Texas in 1940 to study at the University of Texas, which she attended for two years. Building a family interrupted her education, and after twenty years she began taking classes at the University of Houston. In 1974 she became the first person to earn the doctorate of history from that institution. Margaret taught at Houston Community College and the University of Houston at Clear Lake, where she retired in 1985.

Margaret was a widely respected Texas historian. Her Samuel May Williams: Early Texas Entrepreneur (1976), won the Sons of the Republic of Texas' Summerfield G. Roberts Award. She wrote histories of Chambers County (1986) and Baytown (1988) as well as The Cartwrights of San Augustine (1993) and Lorenzo de Zavalla (1996). Margaret also published 42 articles for the New Handbook of Texas.

There are many organizations that will dearly miss Margaret. Besides the East Texas Historical Association, she was active in the Tejano Association for Historic Preservation, a president of the Texas State Historical Association, and the Southern Historical Association.

APPROVED THIS TWENTY-NINTH DAY OF SEPTEMBER 2001.
