Ernestine Sewell Linck

Ernestine Marie Sewell Linck passed away on February 27, 2001 in Paris, Texas. She was born and raised in Texarkana, Arkansas. After graduating from Texarkana High School and Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, she began her teaching career in 1939. Ernestine taught English in high schools in Altheimer and Texarkana, in Arkansas, and in Houston, before pursuing graduate studies at East Texas State University, where she earned her doctorate in 1968. In 1970 she married Charles Linck, who survives her. From 1963 until 1983, Ernestine was professor of English at the University of Texas at Arlington.

In addition to the East Texas Historical Association, Ernestine was a distinguished member in such organizations as the Texas Folklore Society, the Southwestern Literacy Association, and the Western Writers of America. Her popular book EATS: Folklore of Texas Foods (1988) won an award for outstanding non-fiction. She also penned Confronting Crisis: How the Cimarron River Got Its Name & Other Tales about Coffee as well as numerous articles on folklore, popular culture, education, and linguistics.

Ernestine was active in the community of Commerce. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and volunteered her time in numerous causes. Her winsome smile will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.
