John Allen Templeton A RESOLUTION
HONORING THE LIFE OF
JOHN ALLEN TEMPLETON John Allen Templeton passed away on July 15, 2001, in Jacksonville, Texas. Mr. Templeton was born on December 21, 1913. He was a fourth generation descendant of pioneer David G. Templeton who settled in Jacksonville in 1846.
Mr. Templeton was graduated from Jacksonville High School, Lon Morris College, and Southern Methodist University. In 1935 he became editor of the Jacksonville Journal, and in 1938 purchased the paper and became its publisher as well, positions he retained until he sold the newspaper in February 1959. Mr. Templeton thereafter served as vice president for All-Church Press in Fort Worth until 1971 and editor of periodicals for the Presbyterian Church in the United States in Atlanta, Georgia.
In retirement Mr. Templeton returned to Jacksonville and became chairman of the Cherokee County Historical Commission in 1981 and continued in that post until 2000. During his tenure the commission received Distinguished Service Awards from the Texas Historical Commission from 1987 to 1999, and Mr. Templeton received the John Ben Shepherd Leadership Award in 1994. In 1990 he was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Templeton was a member of the East Texas Historical Association and was instrumental in making the Cherokee County Historical Commission an Institutional Member of the Association.
