HONORING THE LIFE OF
SAMUEL STEWART MALONE
Samuel Stewart Malone passed away on February 7, 2001, in San Augustine. He was born in Abilene in 1921 and grew up there. A graduate of Texas Tech, he served as in the South Pacific as a U.S. Marine during World War II.
Sam was best known as a newspaperman during a career that spanned over six decades. He worked on papers in Seminole, Decatur, and White Deer in West Texas, as well as Lovington, New Mexico. During the 1960s he moved to San Augustine, where he became sports editor and farm editor and took charge of photography for the Daily Sentinel. In 1967 Sam and his wife established the weekly San Augustine Rambler and later founded the Hemphill-Pineland Rambler. He also began daily radio broadcasts on station KDET; his last spot aired on Thanksgiving Day, 2000. After selling the papers, he remained on the editorial staff and continued to entertain and inform his readers with a column, "Ramlin' Round." The Beaumont Enterprise also put Sam on their staff as a correspondent.
Sam was involved in numerous community activities. An active Lion and VFW member, he also supported the 4-H Club Youth Development Foundation and was first executive secretary of the Deep East Texas Development Association as well as president of the Texas Outdoor Writers Association, and member of the East Texas Historical Association. He was an active member of the Christ Church Episcopal and held offices in the Sons of the Republic of Texas and Knights of San Jacinto.
