A RESOLUTION
HONORING THE LIFE OF
IRVIN M. MAY, JR.

WHEREAS, Dr. Irvin M. "Irv" May Jr., a native East Texan, remained active all his days in learning and teaching the history of his beloved state; and

WHEREAS, Irv May received degrees from Kilgore College, the University of Texas. Baylor University , and the University of Oklahoma, and taught history at Texas A&M University and Blinn College, where he was known affectionately as "Doc" May to generations of students: and

WHEREAS, Irv May served as a ruling elder at Westminister Presbyterian Church and Stated Clerk of the South Texas Presbytery, Presbyterian Church in America. served on the missions, ministerial relations, and administrative committees, and labored for the well-being of his community; and

WHEREAS, Irv May was a devoted son, husband of Sylvia, father of Emily May and Mary Bollman, stepfather of Mike and David Saul, and grandfather; and

WHEREAS, Irv May loved the mission and work of the East Texas Historical Association, served as its president. 1982-1983, member of the board of directors. program chairman, reviewer of books, and a member of the Ottis Lock Endowment Board. and such service was acknowledged gratefully if inadequately through the presentation of the Ralph W. Steen Service Award: and

WHEREAS, Irv May was a distinguished writer and recipient of the Carol H. Tullis Award from the Texas State Historical Association for the Best Book in Texas History in 1980, and teacher. for which he received the Ottis Lock Excellence in Teaching Award from the East Texas Historical Association; and

WHEREAS, Irv May's love for the Association and Eastern Texas history was known widely through faithful attendance of our Fall and Spring meetings and committee meetings;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the membership of the East Texas Historical Association laments the passing of this "good and faithful servant" on June 2, 2000, extends sympathy to his family and friends, and pledges every effort to sustain the programs and activities he loved and supported with time and resources while yet among us; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the Annual Meeting and another presented as is appropriate to the family of Dr. Irvin M. May Jr., that they may know of the love, affection, and esteem in which he is yet held by all.
