Marilyn McAdams Sibley

A RESOLUTION
HONORING THE LIFE OF
MARILYN MCADAMS SIBLEY


WHEREAS Marilyn McAdams Sibley, born in rural Walker County, Texas, on September 30, 1921, and departed this life on January 19, 2006, was an esteemed historian and scholar and a long-time member of the East Texas Historical Association; and

WHEREAS, Marilyn McAdams Sibley, received her undergraduate degree from Sam Houston State University, her Masters Degree from the University of Houston, and her Ph.D. in History from Rice University; and

WHEREAS, Marilyn McAdams Sibley, served as professor and chair of the History Department at Houston Baptist University, and served as a visiting professor of history at the University of Texas, and an instructor at the University of Houston; and

WHEREAS, Marilyn McAdams Sibley earned a reputation as a scholar of the history of Houston, Texas, and the South, and was the author of eight books, including Travelers in Texas and Lone Stars and State Gazettes, and was the author of numerous articles in the Southwestern Historical Review, the Journal of Southern History, and other scholarly journals; and

WHEREAS, Marilyn McAdams Sibley, served as president of the Texas State Historical Association and received numerous awards honoring her teaching and scholarship, including the Minnie Stevens Piper Award for excellence in teaching and the Summerfield G. Roberts award for the best book about Texas published in 1967; and

WHEREAS, Marilyn McAdams Sibley was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Huntsville and of the Golden Rule Sunday School Class, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the membership of the East Texas Historical Association laments the passing of this “good and faithful servant” on January 19, 2006, and extends sympathy to her family and friends; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the Annual Meeting and another presented as is appropriate to the family of Marilyn McAdams Sibley, that they may know of the love and esteem in which she is yet held by all.
